At Least 98 Palestinian Detainees Have Died in Detention Since October 2023, Israeli Data Indicates
According to data from Israel, at least 98 Palestinian individuals have perished while detained since October 2023. An advocacy organization located in Israel has reported that the true figure is probably substantially larger, due to hundreds of missing individuals originating in Gaza.
Study Results

Even with the overall count of casualties recorded being much greater than other recent estimates, it likely fails to capture the entire scope of Palestinian loss, according to the leader of the prisoner monitoring division.
“While we are offering documentation for a greater figure of deaths than earlier indicated, this is an incomplete account,” he explained. “We are certain that there are still detainees who perished in custody that we don’t know about.”
Civilian Deaths
Confidential government records shows that the majority of Palestinian detainees from Gaza who died in prison were ordinary citizens, based on a related examination.
In May of this year, a armed services record monitoring all militants in Gaza, a list of over 47,000 listed people, documented just 21 fatalities in detention. By that point, 65 Gazans from Gaza had died in prison.
Detention Conditions
Physical violence, mistreatment, and additional maltreatment of detainees from Palestine has been normalised across Israel’s detention facilities throughout the duration of war. Organized Maltreatment

“In spite of this mass number of casualties, throughout the conflict not a single person has been arrested,” the official stated. “There exist no prosecutions over any killing.
“During the time these policies remain in effect, each Palestinian individual in custody is at peril, including the physically well individuals, even the juveniles who have no medical issues.”
Prominent Examples
Certain fatalities in detention have been widely reported, for instance a senior medical chief who perished in prison after four months in detention.
An inmate detained alongside the deceased testified that he was taken to the yard by prison staff immediately preceding his demise, obviously hurt and naked from the hips downward. His corpse has not been repatriated to Gaza.
Other prisoners who died in detention in Israel remain anonymous. The prison service and military gave investigators with the total of deaths in confinement, and basic further data including the facility where they died, but without the detainees’ identities.
Identification Challenges
For 21 instances, primarily individuals from Gaza, analysts could not to match the minimal data provided by government bodies to a fatality documented by advocacy bodies, via testimony from released detainees or coverage in the media.
