Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements made by captain Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered those words in several conversations following England's loss in the second Ashes versus Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the playing group.

"I've done all the talking over the past two days that I required," said the England leader.

But, following the opener made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team require four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, the opener insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has produced some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley concluded.
