The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the major response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a handful of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
