Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, not only the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an dual-role player," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
