Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off popular slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Findings released in a major health publication points out that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals using these medications must be cognizant of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

People who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is greater among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on integrated lifestyle support.
